  4.     CZECH-MATING CHINA. A meeting last month between Czech
  5. President Vaclav Havel and the Dalai Lama would normally have
  6. provoked a stinging protest from China, which regards the
  7. Tibetan leader as an archenemy. But Beijing held its fire when
  8. it discovered that a Taiwanese trade delegation was in Prague,
  9. checkbook in hand, poised to exploit the anticipated breach in
  10. Sino-Czechoslovak relations. Czech diplomats firmly told the
  11. Chinese that the Dalai Lama's visit would not be canceled and
  12. Beijing could take it or leave it. Recognizing the big bucks
  13. Taiwan was ready to dole out to establish themselves in
  14. Czechoslovakia, Beijing decided to leave it.
